Voyager 1 - first to leave the solar system
by
by Carl Franzen, Talking Points Memo Voyager first to leave solar system
NASA’s unmanned Voyager 1 spacecraft, launched in 1977, has become the first vessel in history to reach the edge of the solar system, NASA announced in mid-June.
It’s hard to overstate the milestone: At some point in the near future — it could be days or months, possibly, but not likely even a few years — Voyager is expected to break away from the bubble of particles emitted by the Sun encasing our solar system and enter the totally new, completely unexplored region of interstellar space, the black void separating us from the other star systems in our Milky Way Galaxy.

Issuma: Journey's End
From Victoria, Vancouver Island, B.C. Richard writes from aboard Issuma:
The Future:
I have had a fantastic time sailing Issuma the last few years. Now I want to do something different, and go back to working (I do computer work for a living). So I don’t expect to be sailing far from here in the near future. I don’t expect to be making frequent blog entries until my next adventure (which has not been decided on), so if you’re interested in following along, you may want use the Subscribe menu at the top of the blog so you will be emailed whenever there is a new entry.

Issuma - Sitka to Vancouver Island
Petroglyph Cove |
Issuma has made its way from Sitka down the inside passage to Vancouver Island these past few weeks. More beauty and good weather. A trip I've dreamed of making since I read Jonathan Raban's Passage to Juneau.

Johan Santana pitches first no-hitter in Mets history
I was a Dodger fan - and stayed a fan until the Negro League and Dodger great Jim Gilliam died in 1978. I switched to the Mets and was a loyal fan for the 1986 World Series, jumping for joy when Bill Buckner watched a dribbler bounce through his legs. But in the lean years I switched to the Americnan League Cleveland Indians - because Washington Heights's Manny Ramirez was playing for them. I followed Manny to the Red Sox who were making themselves attractive by winning. I am still a Sox fan but I'm happy for Santana and the Mets that Johan Santana has pitched the first no-hitter in franchise history.
