Issuma's current position.  Richard has been at sea since about April 10 when he departed Cajalba, Brazil where they build these great boats from wood.

Issuma: northbound - stop in Salvador

Richard Hudson has made it 2,200 miles up the coast from the Rio Plata, near Montevideo, Uruguay to Salvador, a city on the north east corner of Brazil. Blog HERE

Issuma: northbound

Richard Hudson and Issuma are northbound.  East of the continental shelf about 26 degrees South , 42 West, nearing the Rio DeJaneiro parallel.  This is sunrise at sea this morning.  From the set of the headsail it looks like the wind has shifted to the north.  Follow the track and Richard's occasional commentary and photography HERE.

Richard Hudson and crew are on Abrao, Brasil. They just posted on the Issuma sail blog this picture of a boat under construction. Hardwood. It's the way to go. They've also got a picture of a replica Gloucester schooner that is impressive.

Issuma: Whale alongside

Richard Hudson and Issuma are underway, southbound sailing close to the coast of Brazil. Here is what they encountered yesterday. You are looking through the triangle formed by the main sheet at the aft end of the boom. The red piece is, I assume, the wind vane for the self-steering mechanism.

Soutbound from Salvador "out of the tropics" toward cooler weather is where Richard Hudson reports he is headed. It'll get cooler alright. This is the astral winter, isn't it?
