The Great Dry Docks at Erie Basin. Red Hook, Brooklyn waterfront were at the heart of New York's central place in the world's maritime industries. Ships as long as 700 feet could be accommodated to be repaired, maintained, built, and rebuilt at the Todd Shipyard until the drydock's short-sighted demolition in 2006 to became the Ikea parking lot.
Today some of the artifacts remain as Erie Basin Park - on the edge of the huge Ikea store in Red Hook at Erie Basin. The only ships that now dock there are the ferries that bring shoppers. Across the basin Reinauer Transportation docks its waiting barges.
