Greenland Char by Pescadotes

I have dreamed of  Greenland ever since my late dear friend Louise Halper gave me a copy of Rockwell Kent's N by E, his story of sailing to to Greenland. Their boat dragged anchor in a storm and was wrecked.  That gave him the opportunity to stay until his shipmates could return the next summer with the materials needed to repair the boat.  Of course he did some fabulous painting, and he shacked up with an Inuit woman named Salamina who he celebrated and painted in a book of the same name.

Hunters of Greenland

The Times has posted a spectacular slideshow by Ragnar Axelsson of hunters in the east of Greenland who spend up to two months on the ice. It looks like Ansel Adams' Yosemite carved in ice. A wonderful place to visit if it weren't so...cold.
Well maybe in the summer for the salmon run....if it weren't for the...mosquitoes.

One of my heroes - Rockwell Kent - was shipwrecked there and stayed, painting what Axelsson has photographed. His stay was warmed by... Salamina.

Monhegan

Monhegan is a magic island.

N.C. Wyeth, Rockwell Kent,and  James Wyeth each made his mark painting it. Monhegan is like a jazz standard.  If you play sax you have to try Body & Soul. 

Landscape painters and photographers have to try Monhegan.  (My day will come.)

Taisy's graduation gift (self-selected) when she finished at Bates was a David Vickery (Cushing, ME) painting of an afternoon summer storm at nearly the same spot and same light as the shot here from Doris Madsen's Flickr set.

She and her husband own a Monhegan skiff built built at Carpenters Boatshop in Pemaquid where I just bought a skiff of the same design.  More on that later.
